Mainstream country, as in top 40, is not country music, it’s pop music.  Simple as that.  The package it comes in, laden with a cheap, deliberate drawl, trite twang and cheesy thematic material is simply there to make the consumer feel like they’re participating in a particular of culture or tradition.  It’s simply a branding, a label, a consumer identity.  Make no mistake, modern country music is pop music.  As pop as Lady Gaga.  Designed and focus group-tested to sell. -Ricky
